Litany of Affirmation

Leader:  This is the good news which we have received,
in which we stand, and by which we are saved.
People:  Christ died for our sins, was buried,
was raised on the third day,
and appeared first to the women,
then to Peter and the twelve,
and then to many faithful witnesses.
We believe Jesus is the Christ,
the Anointed One of God,
the firstborn of all creation,
the firstborn from the dead,
in whom all things hold together,
in whom the fullness of God was pleased
to dwell by the power of the Spirit.
Christ is the head of the body, the church,
and by the blood of the cross
reconciles all things to God. Amen.

Benediction

Leader:  Go in peace to love and serve the Lord
in the power of the resurrection. Alleluia! The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
People:         Amen.
Leader:         Christ is risen!
People:         (louder) Christ is risen!
Leader:         (louder) Christ is risen!
People:         (louder) Christ is risen!
Leader:         (louder) Christ is risen!

Put to the test, we show our doubtful, disobedient,
and deceitful selves. But there is One who shows
a trusting, obedient, and truthful self. Who could imagine
that one day we will do as he has done and live
as genuine sons and daughters of God?

The youth group is leading worship next Sunday.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 9. We will have a brief service to open this season of reflection and reconciliation at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Also, on Thursdays during Lent (beginning Feb. 17) we will host ecumenical Prayers for Peace from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in our sanctuary. These guided prayer times replace the Lenten worship & fellowship meals of years past.

Invitation from the Elders. We want to pray with you for specific needs and about spiritual issues you're facing. Beginning in February, we will be available at the back of the sanctuary at 9 a.m. the second Sunday of the month. Please call one of us or Pastor Susan if you prefer meeting at another time or location.

Call to Worship

L:     Let the name of the Lord be praised,
both now and forever.

P:     For God has anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit and with power,

L:     to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim freedom for the captives,

P:     to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

L:     At Jesus' baptism, God confirmed:
``This is my Son, whom I love;
with whom I am well pleased.''

P:     Let us praise God
that Jesus was baptized
to fulfill all righteousness,
that we are buried with Christ in baptism,
that we will be united with Christ
in resurrection. Amen.

MCC Update, January 14, 2005

Mennonite Central Committee's response to the Asia earthquake disaster has been increased to $10 million U.S. This is the single largest MCC response to war, famine, or
natural disaster in its 85-year history. "The generous outpouring of donations and support has been humbling," MCC Executive Director Ronald J.R. Mathies said. "We praise God for these gifts and will put them all to use bringing hope and healing to people who have suffered so much."

The current response includes material aid shipments, some of which are being airlifted to the region and will arrive on Tuesday. The remaining funds will be directed toward immediate and long-term response efforts proposed by MCC partners and assessment teams now in the region.

Relief Kits, Additional Needs. MCC and Indonesian Mennonite churches are requesting 22,000 relief kits for tsunami survivors in Aceh province, Indonesia. Two Indonesian Mennonite church groups are assembling 2,000 kits to send to Aceh, where the deadly wave claimed an estimated 100,000 lives and made 500,000 people homeless. Mennonite churches in Europe will also be joining the effort. "We need to join hands together to relieve the suffering," said Timotius Adhi Dharma, general secretary of Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia, one of two Indonesian Mennonite synods organizing the Indonesian relief kits drive. In the United States and Canada, relief kits for this appeal are requested by early February. For a list of kit contents and collection points, visit www.mcc.org/asiaearthquake.

Please visit the MCC website or call 316 283-2720 for further information. Thank you for continuing to help in this work of love and compassion.

EARTHQUAKE
and TSUNAMI SURVIVORS NEED OUR HELP!!!

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has begun
a 1.4 million dollar immediate and long-term response
to devastation left behind by the southern Asia
earthquake and tsunamis that have killed more than
100,000 people in eight countries, one third of them
children. Funds for food, clothing, fuel, health items,
employment and reconstruction have been requested
by partner agencies in India and Sri Lanka. As the
tragic situation in Indonesia continues to unfold
MCC expects to further increase its response.

"The goal of this effort is to allow people
to begin restoring their dignity and livelihoods,"
said Willie Reimer, MCC Director of Food,
Disaster and Material Resources.

Donations designated for the Asia Earthquake Fund
can be mailed to MCC Central States, PO Box 235,
North Newton, KS 67117. Credit card donations can
be made by calling 316 283-2720 (MCC Central States) or 888 563-4676 (MCC Akron, PA) or by logging
onto the MCC Website: www.mcc.org/asiaearthquake.
